The Academy is the oldest scientific center in the Western United States, founded after the California gold rush to survey the vast resources of California and beyond. Today it has grown to be the fourth largest natural history museum in the country and features important exhibitions about the natural world. It also holds 18 million specimens and supports eight scientific departments, which conduct important biodiversity research around the world.
