Escape from New York Pizza hosts their monthly “Poetry and Pizza” Night. For a $5 donation (which goes directly to a charity of the poets’ choice) you can enjoy all-you-can eat pizza, salad and soda, plus listen to two poets reading their latest work. This month the poets are the grotesque but hilarious works of Dustin Heron and Zulema Renee Summerfield who writes flash fiction. Proceeds benefit KPFA.
Of DUSTIN HERON’S first book of stories, Paradise (2007, Small Desk Press), Linh Dinh says, “At times grotesque, bizarre, often hilarious and always painfully true, it features a cast of vivid
characters, including several ghosts and a talking stack of shit.” Heron also keeps a blog called Because I’m Bored at Work.
ZULEMA RENEE SUMMERFIELD is currently pursuing her MFA
in fiction from San Francisco State University. She writes primarily flash fiction, and is also working on a novel for young adults. She is originally from Redlands, California.
Founded in 1949 by Lewis Hill, a pacifist, poet, and journalist, and KPFA was the first community supported radio station in the USA. KPFA broadcasts on 94.1 FM and KPFB 89.3 FM, Berkeley, and KFCF 88.1 FM, Fresno, California. Much of the programming is local, original and eclectic, with a well produced mix of news and in depth public affairs, an ongoing drama, literature and performance series, interviews, and reviews. The majority of the staff are unpaid community volunteers.
Pizza is Free, Poetry is Priceless
