Since 1972, East Bay Bicycle Coalition has represented the interests of bicyclists throughout Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. EBBC’s volunteers and affiliated clubs successfully advocated for bicycle access on BART trains soon after we were founded. Bicyclists are also now accommodated on all local and transbay buses, ferries, California Amtrak trains, and on shuttles over the Bay Bridge. In 2004, Bay Area voters approved our Safe Routes to Transit Program as a component of the regional bridge toll increase. Our successful campaign for direct access on the new East Span of the Bay Bridge is renown, and we expect to ride on six of the seven transbay bridges that touch East Bay shores within a few years. Of course, much still needs to be done to improve transit access, build bikeway, and provide secure bicycle parking. At a grassroots level, we focus on the development and implementation of bicycle transportation plans in 33 cities. We further promote the formation of citizen-based Bicycle Advisory Committees (BACs) to review plans and prioritize bikeway funding. EBBC also participates in countywide and regional bicycle planning and funding.
