“What’s The Big Idea” Day: All-day Festival @ Yerba Buena Center for Arts (SOMA)

Free all-day for everyone. From noon until 7:30pm, YBCA invites people to learn more about contemporary art with an open house festival of exciting events & exhibitions that highlight the last Big Idea of the season—Identity Shifts. Enjoy visual art, comedy, music, performances, hands-on workshops, exhibition tours, film screenings and food & drink.

noon–5 pm • The Room for Big Ideas
Custom t-shirt silk screening with YBCA’s Young Artists at Work. Bring a shirt to be screened or come early to be one of the first 100 visitors get a free t-shirt.

Dialogues about our current exhibitions, The Way That We Rhyme: Women, Art & Politics and Tracing Roads through Central Asia: On Traders’ Dilemmas and Travelers’ Perspectives in the gallery with YBCA Gallery Guides

The Counterfeit Crochet Project organized by Stephanie Syjuco, a featured artist from The Way That We Rhyme exhibition. Syjuco and friends will teach visitors how to crochet their own luxury brand accessories.

Art Savvy is a workshop designed to deepen your connection with contemporary art. Tour The Way That We Rhyme and participate in a post-tour discussion, an overview of contemporary art and an introduction to Visual Thinking Strategies.
1 pm & 2:30 pm • Screening Room
Banned by the US military for over 35 years, John Huston’s Let There be Light, is an unflinching documentary that follows 75 World War II soldiers who sustained debilitating emotional trauma and depression. The film chronicles their entry into a psychiatric hospital, their treatment and eventual recovery.

Community Conversations: Women, Art & Politics—Women in Hip-Hop Summit
A town hall meeting that brings together women to discuss the art, politics and aesthetics of hip-hop as well as how it informs their creative, intellectual and political processes. With Aya de Leon, Anita Johnson & more.
5:00 pm–5:15 pm • 701 Mission Street Entrance
A body-rocking performance by Sisterz of the Underground, a community of women who choose hip-hop as a form of expression.
5:30 pm–6:30 pm • Forum
Comedy showcase hosted by MC Aundre the Wonderwoman; includes comedians Samantha Chanse and Ali Wong. Plus see Queen Kellita and King Everett, the newly crowned King and Queen of Carnaval San Francisco, with Hot Pink Feathers and Blue Bone Express for a dance performance not to be missed!
6:30 pm–7:30 pm • Grand Lobby
Happy Hour with DJ La Niche (MANGO) adds more flavor to the evening with salsa, reggaeton, and Cuban hip-hop.
