Pier 39 will host the 2008 American Sailing League Championship series on Saturday, June 28 and Sunday, June 29 from noon to 6 p.m. Competing American Sailing League athletes will race in 18 foot skiffs, which offer open design parameters, high speed and spectacular capsizes right off the Bay end of Pier 39. Weighing in at 375 lbs., these boats carry 1,200 square feet of sail area and are characterized by long racks that protrude from the sides of the boat and allow the three-man crew extra leverage against the enormous sail area. Spectators will have a perfect view of the races with Alcatraz providing a perfect backdrop to all of the action.
