$5 First Friday Hands-on Family Activities | Oakland

Each $5 First Friday at Chabot is an exciting and immersive experience for all ages. Join them each month for hands-on activities and live demonstrations that are fun for the whole family.

Pre-purchase tickets – $5

This event occurs every first Friday of the month. Each month there will be new things to explore. Some activities have limited capacity and are first come, first served.

Mars Rover Curiosity: Come and see the full sized replica of the NASA Mars rover.
The ClimateMusic Project: 6:30pm and 7:30pm
Join us in the Planetarium for a performance by The ClimateMusic Project, a science & arts collaborative that uses music to teach people about climate change in a fresh and engaging way. The collaborative is made up of leading climate scientists and versatile artists who pull from terabytes of climate data and the most advanced climate models to create music that reflects the story of our climate, past, present, and future. Following the performance, you will have the opportunity to engage the scientists, composer, and musicians in a live discussion and Q&A session.

Climate Game Show Presented by the Climate Reality Project: 6:30pm, 7:30pm and 8:30pm
How much do you know about climate change? What we can do to be part of the solution? Come join us and play along in this interactive, multimedia presentation for a fun and serious approach to learning the latest facts and impacts. Everyone can play, and participants will be able to share what their families are already doing to help solve the crisis.

Join in on the fun and participate in hands on science activities with our resident scientists and community partners.
Telescope Viewing: 7:30-10:30pm
The impressive 20″ telescope, named Rachel, is the largest refractor in the western United States regularly open to the public. Its companion, the 8″ Alvan Clark refractor, named Leah, is the original 1883 instrument donated by founder Anthony Chabot. Nellie, Chabot‘s youngest and most powerful telescope, is housed in a rolling roof observatory, allowing access to 180 degrees of sky. This modern, research-quality telescope offers breathtaking views of the cosmos.
Sci-Fi Story Time: 7:30pm
Sit out on our Observatory Deck and listen to our resident storyteller tell stories of science fiction for all ages.
Star Stories: 8:30pm
Bring your sleeping bag and a jacket for star gazing and storytelling on our Observatory Lawn.
Space in Your Face (17 and over): 9pm-10pm
Space in your Face combines small acts of music, comedy, skits, and quizzes with engaging and enthusiastic science lectures all converging on a space related topic. Space in Your Face is chocked full of adult humor and innuendos, and we kindly ask that audience members be over 17 years of age.
Interstellar Space DJs: Yo Santos & miz-iggy 6:30pm-9:30pm
Our resident DJ’s will bring you their cosmic beats that will get your moonboots moving. This will be one giant dance party for mankind.

Cosmos 360: When Things Collide 9:15pm
Movies, mythology, and popular culture paint many pictures of the ways that our world might end. How does science shed light on world-ending planetary disruptions past and future? We’ll fly to celestial sites of devastation and disaster, exploring how these events shape our Universe, and could even threaten life on Earth.
Megadome Shows:
Solar Max 6:15pm
A breathtaking exploration into the awesome vastness and mysterious power of our closest star. Take a unique journey through time and space and experience the sun’s severe force and beauty. Featuring real images captured by NASA’s SOHO satellite.
Dinosaurs Alive 7:15pm
Take a journey with some of the world‘s preeminent paleontologists as they uncover evidence that the descendants of dinosaurs still walk (or fly) among us. From the exotic, trackless expanses and sand dunes of Mongolia‘s Gobi Desert to the dramatic sandstone buttes of New Mexico, the film will follow American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) paleontologists as they explore some of the greatest dinosaur finds in history.
