2019 Architecture & the City Festival | SF

The 16th annual month-long celebration features behind the scenes and walking tours, films, exhibitions, lectures and more that address varying aspects of the design and planning process.

This years festival theme, “We the City”, aims to explore how cultural diversity and connectivity inspire and inform the built environment. From the Dogpatch to the Outer Sunset — San Francisco is a unique, diverse, and multi-generational mosaic.

Did you know that San Francisco’s largest wastewater treatment plant is located in the Bayview? Did you know that an invisible network of 1000+ pipes carries 80% of San Francisco’s sewer and stormwater to this unique location in the Bayview?

San Francisco’s Southeast Treatment Plant (SEP) is an inner-city facility about to undergo operational improvements and upgrades worth $2 billion as part of the $6.9 billion Sewer System Improvement Program (SSIP). Take a walk through the treatment plant and understand the basic concepts behind San Francisco’s combined sewer system and become aware of the planned technological improvements that will transform this facility into a state of the art resource recovery campus.
