Here’s the latest updates about tonights’ “art mob” event:

Spurred on by the creative mayhem of CCA MFA candidate Michael Fox, members of the Green Street Mortuary Marching Band “crash” the California College of the Arts graduation ceremony in San Francisco and will play an original piece in the keys of C and A entitled “Craft in the Key of Art,” in a New Orleans funereal style to reflect the art school’s recent devaluation of craftsmanship in favor of art business.

What Happened to the “Crafts” in “Arts and Crafts?” The CCA was formerly known as the California College of Arts and Crafts, and Fox claims that the institute changed its name and dropped the word “crafts” because a survey indicated the word was not as beneficial to the students as the word “art.”

The action set off a confusing inner dialogue about art and its craft and commerce in Fox’s thoughts, since he obtained his undergraduate degree from the CCAC and was now getting his MFA from the CCA. The missing C, for craft, represented an issue of priority for Fox, who is a world-renowned glass blower.

Join the Art Mob: The event also encourages attendees to bring a small object to help create a simultaneous and collective work of art. “Participate by bringing an object you can fit in your pocket. Together we will create art, a massive piece that is comprised of pocket-sized objects. This is an open call to participate in life, to get an honorary MFA, to be the participating artist in an MFA thesis show.”

A Funcheap Word of Caution About This Event
We love fun flash-mobs, but we’re not sure exactly what the angle is here: Basically this event is an end of the year art show by MFA students at CCA, and then an outsider who calls himself  “holden caulfield” who wants to organize others to come crash the event with their own flash-mob type art show.

A Renegade Artist With An Important Message? Or Just A Party Crasher?
This event might turn out to be an interesting exercise in comparing scholastically “approved” art with the collective art of the mob, or it might just something as simple as a rejected art student trying to have flash mob zombies (people who just like to participate in any flash mob type event) do his dirty work and try show up a group of artists he wasn’t invited to be a part of.
