Event Details

Thirty years ago, 34 artists painted 26 murals in the Mission District’s Balmy Alley to express their opposition to U.S. intervention in Central America and to celebrate Mission Culture and Identity. They called themselves the PLACA Collective (PLACA signifies “to leave a mark” among other meanings).

Join the community Sunday, October 19, 2014 from, 2-9pm along Balmy Alley for a big grass roots celebration block party. There will be live mural painting and restoration, dance performances, music, and a film screening at 7pm of “These Walls Speaks” a short documentary film.

Also see the unveiling at 4pm of Miranda and O’Brian’s restoration of the mural “Culture Contains the Seeds of Resistance.”

1984 Mural Restoration Project

This is “Culture Contains the Seed of Resistance That Blossoms into the Flower of Liberation.” Originally painted in 1984 it has faded over time and two of the original artists, are restoring it set to be unveiled at this celebration. Read more on Indigogo and SF Gate.
