Event Details

Prisoner Reentry Network is hosting its fourth BBQ for formerly incarcerated people in beautiful Preservation Park. Everyone is invited to enjoy the company and some delicious BBQ.

They have a lot to celebrate. In the past year:

  • PRN demanded and won system-wide changes within the California Department of Corrections to ensure that prisoners are not punished for possessing their birth certificates.
  • PRN’s Executive Director presented to the Secretary of Corrections, the Inspector General, the -Executive Officer of the Board of Parole Hearings, the Undersecretary of Corrections, and many chiefs within the department. Because of their videos and knowledge of the situation facing people leaving prison, they have their ear.
  • PRN presented its resources and videos to thousands of prisoners and staff in San Quentin State Prison, Mule Creek State Prison, Valley State Prison, California State Prison – Solano, and California Health Care Facility.
  • Their videos of formerly incarcerated people are being screened nationwide through Edovo, an educational organization that provides tablets to prisoners. Transcripts will be published to prisoners throughout California through the San Quentin News.
  • Their Executive Director has presented about the history of California’s prisons and the history of parole in California to stakeholders throughout the state.
  • They have started Fair Chance Bay Area, which showcases Bay Area businesses that hire and support formerly incarcerated people (come to the BBQ to celebrate the launch!).
  • Their PRN has developed a guide to getting through the parole hearings process and will send it to people preparing for a board hearing.
  • PRN and The Embassy Network host bi-monthly dungeons and dragons game for formerly incarcerated people to continue their decade-long group from the inside.

Free for formerly incarcerated people and their families. Otherwise, it’s $20.
