Event Details

Like Seneca Falls, Selma and Stonewall, the San Francisco sit-in was a seminal event in U.S. civil rights history. For 24 days, people with disabilities took over the fourth floor of the San Francisco Federal building, successfully leading advocates in 10 cities across the country in an effort that succeeded in stopping President Carter from re-instituting the shameful “separate but equal” doctrine as national policy.
Author HolLynn D’Lil in her book Becoming Real in 24 Days, and as a participant in the 504 demonstrations, presents a slide show of the historic photographs from her book. There will be voter registration material before and after the event as well as assistance filling out voter registration forms. A book sale by Friends of the San Francisco Public Library follows the event.
