Event Details

This workshop is a fun introduction to encaustics, a way of combining wax, glues and color together to create a painting. The encaustic medium is made with natural, unbleached beeswax and a natural resin which will be prepared in advance and painted onto a wooden surface. Participants will inscribe designs into the boards and then enhance them by adding colored mediums such as oil pastels. A light amount of heat will be added to fuse the colors into the design, which will produce an ethereal effect. This magical medium is age-old and dates back to the ancient Roman Egyptian times.

About the instructor: Cheryl Ann Shanks is a Bay Area artist and arts educator in Napa. She has a waterfront studio on Mare Island where her work is on display and can be seen by appointment. She has taught encaustic workshops and college courses in Napa, Marin, Sonoma and in Mendocino at the Art Center.

This workshop is for ages 7 and up.
