Bring raingear/umbrella and binoculars and a birding field guide if possible, and come learn about all the winter birds migrating to Lake Merritt. The waterbirds you will be concentrating on are usually very easy to see even without binoculars.

Meet at 2pm at the main entrance of the Rotary Science Center (600 Bellevue Ave) at Lake Merritt. Your guide will be Ron Felzer, who has been teaching Biology and Environmental Studies at Merritt College since 1970.

This is a guided walk of about an hour (or longer for those really interested) along the shore of Lake Merritt and aimed at beginners but also anyone who has some birding experience and wanting to sharpen their skills.

We will be concentrating on waterfowl (ducks, geese, grebes, loons, cormorants, etc.), particularly native birds which migrate to Lake Merritt from the north and the interior United States and Canada and are winter visitants in this area. Identification will be emphasized, but also many aspects of the birds’ ecology and migrations will be discussed. Land birds will also be identified and discussed as appropriate.

This walk will be conducted rain or shine.
