Every first and third Friday of the month, locally sourced Artist Activators offer up free art making. Block Fest animates and celebrates the unit block of Turk Street with free arts activities, cultural offerings, community information, and discussion for the local residents, workers, and visitors.

From live performance and art exhibition to screen printing workshops and crochet jams, Block Fest is a monthly celebration of the Tenderloin’s creative spirit.

Contribute to a community sculpture assembled from found objects with Artist Activator Adam Herbst. Choose from a wide array of curious and beautiful materials to construct the creature and add your piece to its written history and taxonomy. The community sculpture will be displayed later for all to see.

Starting from a broad range of upcycled materials garnered from Scrap and other locations, participants will design and create a ‘Creature’ whose shape, attributes, abilities, and personal story—along with the history and taxonomy of its species—will be determined as it goes along. They will provide a minimal skeleton, and artists can add body parts, color, texture, and any other aspects they’d like.
