Independent Book Store Day 2020

Independent Bookstore Day will take place at more than 400 bookstores nationwide. For one day, and one day only, limited, unique books and art pieces will be available in more than 400 independent stores across the country.

Independent bookstores are not just stores, they’re community centers and local anchors run by passionate readers. They are entire universes of ideas that contain the possibility of real serendipity. They are lively performance spaces and quiet places where aimless perusal is a day well spent.

  • 11 am: Join local author/musician/donut lover/raconteur Eli Meyskens and local illustrator/former kids’ book section wizard extraordinaire Ashley Despain for a morning of storytime and drawing instruction. Eli will read from his book The Lonely Bridge while Ashley teaches you how to draw one.
  • 11:30 am to 1:30 pm: Perennial favorite Silvi the Poet will be on hand typing up and passing out complimentary poems by request. Tips are appreciated for these beautiful custom pieces of art; perfect for gifts (Mother’s Day is on May 14th, hint hint)
  • 2 pm to 4 pm: Kids’ book buyer Sara will be hosting a Create-Your-Own Little Golden Book class in the Granny Smith Room.
  • 4 pm to 6 pm: Join Studio Nico for a live screen-printing demonstration in the new Orchard space in the Fiction and Music Annex at 520 Clement. Bring your own t-shirt or canvas tote bag to join the fun and screenprint either “Good Grammar is Sexy” or Green Apple’s 50th Anniversary logo design onto your own cloth item.
  • 6 pm to 7 pm: San Francisco Chronicle reporter and author of High Spirits JK Dineen will be joining for an evening of cocktails and conversation. Bring your valid ID to join the fun.

– Oh, and did we mention there will be free beer? Because there will be free beer from a local brewer, of course.
