2015 SF Comics Fest

The Cartoon Art Museum is honored to celebrate the contributions of underground comix with special guests Mark Bode (Cobalt-60), Paul Mavrides (The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers), Ted Richards (Dopin’ Dan), Susan Stern (Big Bitch), Ron Turner (Last Gasp Books), and more to be announced.

A Celebration of Underground Comix will focus on Last Gasp Books, the legendary San Francisco-based publishing and distribution company founded by Ron Turner in 1970. Last Gasp is one of the largest and oldest publishers and purveyors of underground books and comics in the world, celebrating its 45th year in business. Today, Last Gasp publishes 12-20 new titles per year, focusing on “lowbrow” and “pop surrealist” artists, as well as graphic novels and pop culture titles. They also distribute all sorts of weird ‘n’ wonderful subversive literature, graphic novels, tattoo, and art books, supplying them to bookstores and art galleries on six continents.

Guest speakers at this event will reminisce about the underground comix movement as well as Last Gasp’s contribution to the genre.
