Everyone is welcome to attend the popular, fun and uniquely San Francisco tradition – the annual Cable Car Bell Ringing Contest.

This two-part competition features the best of the SFMTA’s professional bell-ringers vying for the coveted title of Bell Ringing World Champion, as well as local personalities competing for fundraising prizes.

2017 Cable Car Bell Ringing Contest
Thursday, July 13, 2017 | 12 noon
Union Square, San Francisco
FREE – No ticket or RSVP needed, just be there at the Square

The rules are simple: no props, no electronic devices, no additional accompaniment, dress in uniform.

The idea is to recreate the atmosphere of an operator in service, featuring his or her best showmanship for customers coasting along San Francisco’s scenic cable car lines.

Operators are typically judged on rhythm, originality and style. The 2017 finalists will try to win the title from reigning  World Champion Bell Ringer, Leonard Oats. See videos of past competitions from The Cable Car Guy.
