This weekend in San Francisco features a pride-filled parade and book reading, a really really free market and festivals for both folk and the Top 40.

Here’s our picks for our favorite six things to do this weekend – June 24-26, 2011.

Chaz Bono Book Reading in the Castro

Start off your Pride weekend right by attending activist, author and parade Grand Marshall Chaz Bono’s reading of his new book Transitions at Books Inc. in the Castro. Get there early though for this Friday evening reading, as while the event is free, the store will most likely reserve space for those who purchase books at the event.

Books Inc. (2275 Market St., SF) | Saturday, June 25 | Noon | FREE

The Really Really Free Market

As the old cliché goes, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure, so pack up your usable items, foods, skills and talents and bring them to the Really Really Free Market, which is held every last Saturday of the month in Dolores Park. However, this month’s market will feature a special appearance by the SF Free School, which will be setting up a “big blue box” where teachers from the school will be offering lessons in everything from African dance to poetry. You can find anything from fresh produce to on-the-spot yoga instruction here, so make it down to the park and find something unexpected at this communal “potluck” of trinkets, treats and talents.

Dolores Park (19th and Dolores St., SF) | Saturday, June 25| 1-5p | FREE

35th Annual San Francisco Free Folk Festival

Dig out your musical jug and find your fiddle because the annual San Francisco Free Folk Festival is back at Presidio Middle School for its 35th year. It’s two days worth of music, dance workshops and parties, concerts, crafts, vendors and socializing with other folk enthusiasts about topics as diverse as bluegrass and belly dancing. With over 60 musical performers this year and workshops on things like singing in a barbershop quartet or making music with found objects, this free fair of all things folk will get you working on anything and everything, whether it be your whistling, wash-tubbing or waltz.

Alice 97.3’s 2011 Summerthing Free Concert

If folk isn’t really your style, then get your Top 40 fix with Alice 97.3’s free “Summerthing” concert in Golden Gate Park featuring performances by arena alt-rockers OneRepublic, singer-songwriters Matt Nathanson and Michelle Branch, as well as pop rock acts Parachute and Andrew Allen. Alice is also offering several free activity areas like “the ArtThing,” where concertgoers can color in a free Summerthing poster, and “the DoggieThing,” where even your dogs can take advantage of deals like free treats. So get your fill of sunshine, fresh air and some of radio’s favorite alternative rockers at San Francisco’s very own version of Summerfest. Volunteering opportunities at the festival

After an activity-filled Saturday, spend Sunday watching the Pride Parade go down Market Street, browse through hundreds of booths and vendors, listen to Estonian dance sensation Kerli headline the Main Stage or just cap off the night by attending one of the many after parties and club celebrations in the Castro and beyond.
