Free Money Day

A social experiment about sharing money with complete strangers

OK, this is an odd one, but they may just be on to something. At the heart of Free Money Day 2014 is a social experiment: What happens when we share money with complete strangers?

Free Money Day” is a decentralized global “event” in which people hand out their own money to complete strangers (either two coins or two bills at a time), asking recipients to pass half of the amount on to someone else.

The goal is raise awareness and start conversations about the benefits of more sharing economies; people will hand out their own coins, two at a time, asking people to pass one on to someone else.

“Why? Because if we can open our hearts to the vulnerability associated with sharing something deemed as sacred as money, then we’re encouraging others, indeed giving others the permission, to do the same. And this grossly unequal world could certainly do with a little more sharing.

It’s a liberating opportunity to explore our attachments to money and encourage more sharing economies.”
