Yes, Muni is Free Tonight on New Year’s Eve 2020/2021

Muni, Caltrain, SamTrans, AC Transit and VTA are free tonight, but no special late night service.

Even during these COVID times when most everything is shut down, in order to ensure those who need a safe ride home New Year’s Eve have one, many Bay Area transit agencies are offering free rides, but not having any extended service.

Confirmed Free Rides for 12/31/20


SF Muni

Confirmed for 12/31/20

On New Year’s Eve, Muni will operate for essential trips and will not collect fares from 8:00 p.m. Thursday, December 31, 2020, until 5:00 a.m. Friday, January 1, 2021.

Please do not tag your Clipper card or activate your MuniMobile tickets during this time. Refunds will not be available

AC Transit

Confirmed for 12/31/20

To support everyone who needs to travel on New Year’s Eve, AC Transit is continuing the tradition of offering free rides on all lines beginning at 8 p.m. on December 31 until 5 a.m. on January 1.

SamTrans

Confirmed for 12/31/20

SamTrans will run regular weekday service and offer free rides beginning at 8 p.m. on December 31 until 5 a.m. on January 1.

Caltrain

Confirmed for 12/31/20

Caltrain will be operating their regular weekday service (no special late trains as in years past), with free fares after 8 p.m. The last southbound train departs San Francisco at 12:02 a.m.

VTA

Confirmed for 12/31/20

VTA will be offering free fares after 8 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, Thursday, Dec. 31. All VTA Service will operate on a regular weekday schedule that day and Customer Service will be open between 6 a.m. and 4 p.m. The Downtown San Jose Customer Service Center will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

On Friday, Jan. 1, VTA offices will be closed and all service will operate on a Sunday Schedule. This means that if your route does not normally operate on Sundays it will not be in service on Jan. 1.

No special fares or extended service on New Year’s Eve. Service on January 1st is a “sSunday schedule” and resumes approximately 8am system wide

Golden Gate Transit Bus

Confirmed for 12/31/20

No reduced or free fares and no special late night service. Operating normal weekday service for New Year’s Eve and limited holiday service on New year’s Day

Golden Gate Ferry

Confirmed for 12/31/20

No reduced or free fares. Operating a reduced service on New Year’s Eve and will be closed on New Year’s Day.

“Drink and Alive” Free Cab Program – Likely Canceled

GJEL Accident Attorneys typically pay for a safe ride home up to $20 on Lyft/Uber/Cabs on major holidays. There have been no updates found on GJEL’s website after St. Patrick’s Day 2020 so we’re assuming this program is likely canceled for 12/31/20
