“Our City” Oakland Public Design Fair | 12 Unique Interactive Installations

Come play in Oakland’s central plaza at the first Our City: Oakland Public Design Fair, a three-day celebration of new public design projects that promote play – created by, with, and for the people of Oakland.

With 12 interactive installations, four panels, multiple performances, and a public closing party, the fair will offer something for everyone. The installations will include a pedal-powered musical organ, a human-scale wire-and-bead maze, a photo wall, and a number of interactive play structures for ages 1 to 101.

2016 Our City: Oakland Public Design Fair
Thursday, February 4 – Saturday, February 6 | 8 am to 8 pm
Frank Ogawa Plaza, Oakland
FREE

During the event, thousands of Oakland kids, families, residents, and visitors will experience and respond to the installations – with the goal of inspiring more permanent work that re-imagines the future of the city as a place for play.

On Saturday, February 6, a full day of programming will include panel presentations and performances from exciting leaders in Oakland’s arts, design, and civic communities, as well as a closing party at Pro Arts.

After three days of PLAY in Frank Ogawa Plaza, we will celebrate together at Pro Arts Gallery located directly on the plaza. Delicious light bites and Jamaican rum punch will be provided by the one and only Kingston 11 Cuisine, with music from Russell E.L. Butler to keep you dancing all night long.

Russell E.L. Butler is a Techno DJ and Producer living in Oakland. His latest acclaimed release on Opal Tapes, God Is Change, is an exploration of futuristic black identities, inspired by the Parable series by Octavia E. Butler and honored as one of NPR Music’s 10 Favorite Electronic Albums Of 2015. Russell’s taste in music does not adhere to traditional notions of genre. He plays in a narrative style, weaving together a story with a finesse that hints at a deep knowledge of music history. Whether it is the deep spiritual jazz of Alice Coltrane or the jacking house beats of Frankie Knuckles, Russell will play it in a style all his own.

Kingston 11 Cuisine is an environmentally friendly, community-oriented, innovative restaurant. Their mission is to provide consistent high-quality, delicious blends of Jamaican and Californian cuisines using local and organic ingredients. They are a contemporary urban dining oasis known for great service, cultural exchange and the nexus of great relationships. Their goal is to use these qualities to positively transform the lives of our patrons, employees, and greater community.

Please Note: We’re not sure if bites and libations are complimentary, so bring a few bucks just in case.
