Event Details

Join us for a creative, cross-discipline conversation around the wealth of possibilities of emerging technologies from the viewpoint of the world’s most innovative region Silicon Valley and Europe, a continent with rich cultural heritage, deeply rooted in architecture, music, literature and the arts.

There has always been a connection between technology and the creative arts. From the first use of stone tools to the development of artificial intelligence, technology has influenced artistic expression just as much as creativity has sparked advancements in human technology. Today technology, creativity and culture continue to influence each other as they develop and change over time – from pop songs composed by machines to Google’s AI art app matching fine art doppelgängers.

To explore this interconnection between tech and artistic creativity today and in the near future, Open Austria in collaboration with Advantage Austria will be hosting a pre-South by Southwest (SXSW) Meetup in San Francisco on March 7.

We put together a lineup of movers and shakers from the creativity and tech world – with special guests from Austria, who are all presenting at SXSW, one of the largest creative gatherings featuring tech, music and film.

Experts on the topics of artificial intelligence, machine learning, music, media and entertainment will give insightful talks on the intersection of both industries, future applications, the influence on human behaviour as well as new innovative business concepts, followed by an exclusive avantgarde DJ performance.

About the Speakers/Performers:

Reanne Leuning is Director of Creative Industries at Advantage Austria, Austria’s official trade promotion organisation, and the project manager for Austria’s presence at SXSW. Headquartered in Vienna and with a global network of 110 offices in over 70 countries, Advantage Austria offers a wide range of intelligence and business development services to both Austrian companies and their international business partners, and is the face and voice of Austria‘s export business abroad.
Thomas Lidy is the Head of Machine Learning and AI at Musimap, a company that analyzes the stylistic and emotional content of the world’s music catalog through Artificial Intelligence. Thomas has 14 years of experience in the field of digital music analysis and machine learning. At Musimap, he leads a team of Data Scientists to create a next generation music recommender engine that empowers music supervisors to find the music they need for their productions and music platforms to deliver their users the perfect music for their current mood.

Stefan Lederer is CEO of Bitmovin, a YCombinator company providing software products that solve complex video problems for leading media companies worldwide – in a time where the video and television market is at an inflection point. As video infrastructure provider for online media, Bitmovin is at the forefront of research and commercial applications of next generation streaming technologies that deliver significantly better video quality at fraction of the data used by typical streaming applications of today. Bitmovin works with companies around the globe, including Sling TV, Red Bull Media House, fuboTV, ProSiebenSat1, New York Times, Ooyala and others.

Philipp Baldauf and Gregor Pichler are the CEOs of Butleroy, which takes over tedious time management for you and helps you to arrange appointments, to organize group events, to keep your own priorities such as sports or hobbies in focus, and to plan important errands. All this and more can be done by the smart butler. In order to find a perfect time, we often decide flexibly on the basis of many factors, such as weather, habits, personal preferences, travel times and the like. Thanks to artificial intelligence, Butleroy takes all these decisions and you do not have to worry about them anymore.

Michael Elias Gharzouzi is a musician and a neuroscientist at the Medical University of Vienna. For several years now, Music-Medicine (the study of the physiological effects of musical stimuli on the human body) has been the major focus of research at the Medical University of Vienna. Research has led to the development of the patented Musical Microscope, which allows to identify the exact musical components in relation to their effects on the human body. This not only puts music to the service of medicine, but furthermore allows understanding the “pharmacodynamics” of music in order to revolutionize musical composition altogether. By empowering the composer to elicit precise physiological effects on the listener, music can be individually tailored in order to suit every individual’s physiological needs.

Austria based startup SEEQNC, co-founded by Bernhard Famler, has developed a patented Audio Encoding Technology together with a platform for labels, producers and DJs where they can see who is playing their music live. It does so by encoding Soundcookies into tracks, which are then sent over the speaker anytime the track is played live. Labels and producers receive Push Notifications and social media shares every time they get a play, with all the analytics data shown in their own portal.

Sascha Bém is a musician, composer, author, and journalist. He has many years of experience of two worlds: as the co-composer and drummer of the bands Paradise Now! and CORE, he has toured and published music internationally – and as a media maker, (chief) editor, and freelance author, he has worked for daily newspapers, magazines, online media, and films. As the composer and author of his current project, A_NEW_DAY, Bém builds bridges between music and multimedia, storytelling and spirituality, club sound and theatrical elements, new technologies and archetypal human motives.

Clemens  Handler has refined the art of storytelling for its most sensitive audience: Since he founded handler productions with his wife Angela in 1998, it has become an influential family musical theatre company, attracting more than 1,5 million visitors. Acting as author, composer and director, Clemens has continually expanded the company’s portfolio, integrating a range of projects from dramatic consulting to large-scale entertainment.

Thomas Aigelsreiter is the founder and visual mastermind of kirschgrau, a multimedia agency specializing in story-driven image videos. His works are immediately recognizable; the uniqueness of his productions creates a language of its own. His expert eye and artistic grasp cover the range from editorial illustrations and comics to animated films and commercials. And his work has been crowned with success: he was named one of the “200 best illustrators worldwide” by Lürzer’s Archive, won the Austrian State Prize for Multimedia and has been invited to the Venice Film Festival with two of his shortfilms. With kirschgrau, Thomas is the perfect match for A_NEW_DAY; to ensure the variety and quality demanded by a project like this, he relies on a well-established network of cinematographers, animators and sound engineers.
