Event Details

The public is invited to the Day of Remembrance program to honor the survivors of America’s WWII incarceration camps, support innocent people today; and urge unity among all Americans. Following the program, there will be a candlelight procession to a reception at the Japanese Community and Cultural Center of Northern California. All are welcome. Suggested donation is $8.

Keynote speaker will be Sameena Usman of Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR).

Also on the program will be a spoken word dance performance with Jerry Waki, Francis Wong, Melody Takata, and Lenora Lee; and film clips from the Day of Remembrance Films. The Clifford Uyeno Humanitarian Award will be awarded to Hiroshi Shimizu. John Sasaki will moderate.

This year’s program commemorates 1988 Civil Liberties Act that offered a formal apology by the President Reagan on behalf of the country for the forced removal of Japanese Americans from the West Coast during WWII and reparations of $20,000 to those who survived the incarceration. Reagan declared this mass incarnation as a “grave injustice”. Yet as we look forward to the 30th Anniversary of the Civil Liberties Act of 1988, it is all too apparent that the U.S., under the guise of national security the nation is targeting Muslims, Arabs, and immigrants. Through this Day of Remembrance the Japanese American community, knowing all too well the consequences of war hysteria and racism speaks out to remind us that we are one nation united with a rich and diverse heritage.
