Event Details

In 1850 the Sacramento/San Joaquin Delta was a much different place than today. It was part of an immense everglade system that extended into and included the Central Valley.

A massive transformation occurred with the rapid population growth during and after the Gold Rush. Oak forests, hundreds of meandering rivers, and wetland nesting grounds made way for cities and farms and the increasing demand for fresh water.
