Distler composed Totentanz (Dance of Death) in 1934, after viewing the 15th Century frescoes of the same name in the Marienkirche in Lübeck, Germany, using the motets of Heinrich Schultz and the poetry of Angelus Silesias as inspiration. Shockingly, the Lubeck frescoes were destroyed in an Allied air raid in 1942, shortly before Distler was driven to suicide by the Nazis.

Originally presented nearly 700 years ago, the Chester Mystery Plays were performed outdoors on open pageant wagons as a way to bring the stories of the Bible, both Old and New Testament, to the illiterate masses. The Fall of Lucifer, one of the most popular of the plays due to the humanity it brings to Lucifer and his rivalry with God, is the basis for British composer Geoffrey Burgon’s beautiful choral opera.
