2013 Classes & Talks
- Ongoing – Book & Zine-Making Workshop in the Atrium with San Francisco Center for the Book
The San Francisco Center for the Book is a non-profit organization that fosters the joy of books and bookmaking, and promotes the enduring importance of this medium for self-expression. SFCB will be demonstrating quick and easy bookbinding techniques for unique and durable methods for making sketchbooks and placing finishing touches to your zines.
- 11 am – Cartooning Boot Camp with Judy Johnson-Williams
This workshop will cover the basics of how to tell a story with pictures. Although you probably won’t create an entire comic in just one hour, you will get an introduction to how a cartoonist must think, and some supplies for further practice. The class will include a lot of drawing, and participants will go home with a sketchbook. All ages and skill levels welcome.
- Noon – Screen Printing with Team Print Shop
Team Print Shop is an Oakland-based, full-service creative and technical screen printing shop. You may have seen them leading workshops at Rock Paper Scissors during Mission Creek Oakland, or with their mobile bike shop at Mosswood Park for the annual Printmaker’s Picnic. Team Print Shop graces EBABZ with single and multi-color silkscreen printing techniques, with a dash of their signature flare.
- 1 pm – La Raza Comica: New Directions in Latino Comic Book Art with Ricardo Padilla
Moderator Ricardo Padilla, Co-Founder of the Latino Comics Expo, will discuss the latest trends in Latino Comic Book Art and highlight some of the top artists working in this genre. He will also share some of his challenges and experiences in creating a brand new Latino cultural expo.
- Noon – Milvia Street
A literary reading from the newest issue of this long-running journal out of Berkeley.
- 2 pm – Steve Almond
Steve Almond is the author of ten books of fiction and non-fiction (3 of which are self-published). His memoir Candyfreak was a New York Times Bestseller, and his short stories have appeared in both the Best American and Pushcart anthologies. His most recent collection, God Bless America, won the Paterson Prize for Fiction and was short-listed for The Story Prize. His journalism has appeared in the New York Times Magazine, GQ, and elsewhere. He currently lives and works in Boston, MA.
- 3 pm – Michelle Tea of Sister Spit
Sister Spit began in 1994 through the efforts of co-directors Sini Anderson and Michelle Tea. Sini and Michelle gathered together a group of some of the most notorious, talented, and just frickin’ interesting women and dykes, and went on tour all over the US. Sister Spit at EBABZ 2013 will feature Michelle Tea, as both host and reader, as well as readings by Juliana Delgado Lopera, Tamara Llosa-Sandor, and Ali Liebegott.
