Event Details

Join Playland at 43rd Avenue Artist-in-Residence Tom Ryan for a special program honoring the 80th anniversary of the 1937 Cole and Roe Escape from Alcatraz. Did they make it? Find out the fate of Ralph Roe and Ted Cole, Alcatraz inmates whose escape has never been solved…until now. The story of their escape from Alcatraz runs through the Outer Sunset neighborhood, and like Alcatraz itself, the mystery is best understood through interpretation, the art of revealing meaning.

Hear Tom’s interpretive presentation at 11 revealing the secrets of the escape. Then listen to Alcatraz’s own Ranger Sarah Anderson as she performs her West Coast debut of an Al Capone composition, Madonna Mia, on her accordion. And join Sarah in her Accordion-a-palooza of Alcatraz-themed tunes they all know and love. Bring your accordion and join in. Or play along on Alcatraz-themed noisemakers.
