20th United States of Asian America Festival “Threading Resilience” | SF

Join the 20th Annual United States of Asian America Festival (USAAF) from May to June 2017. Individual artists, arts groups, and arts organizations will produce full-length arts event productions occurring within the city and county San Francisco.

Each year, the United States of Asian American Festival (USAAF) presents between 20 to 30 different programs reflecting the artistic accomplishments and cultural diversity of San Francisco’s Pacific Islander and Asian American communities.

USAAF showcases artists representing a diverse range of ethnic and cultural groups and aims to heighten the visibility of Asian and Pacific Islander (API) artists work in all disciplines – theater, music, dance, film, literature, visual arts, and more. The goal is to nurture and empower these groups to be self-sufficient while providing the support they need to grow.

This year’s theme, Threading Resilience, explores how has identity and visibility for Asians and Pacific Islanders in art and politics evolved; intersections and collaborations in art, identity, and politics have shaped, connected, and strengthened the communities amidst forces of oppression in mainstream culture and media; how we have utilized placemaking for the community throughout history and today; and what it will take to ensure the collective survival of these spaces for future generations.

Threading Resilience describes how each one interacts and connects with each other through art to build a more diverse, empowered community.

N.V.M (Nevermind) is an immersive multimedia art exhibition that embarks on a journey into the unchartered realms of the Asian American psyche. While the stigmatization of mental health for Asian Americans continues to be problematic, storytelling functions as a critical platform to explore these internalized issues.

Utilizing multimedia art as a tool to facilitate creative storytelling and a place for alternative healing experience, N.V.M, sheds light on both external and internal forces that influence the state of Asian American mental health.
