Diamonds = priced way beyond their true value because:
- the price gouging DeBeers monoploy controls most of the diamond trade in the world
- an extremely clever “A Diamond Is Forever” marketing campaign that indoctrinates us that somehow expensive stones = love. At the same time, it precludes an effective 2nd-hand market, because “it’s forever”, right?
You. Must. Buy. Diamond! Must. Buy. Diamond…
And if my diamond isn’t bigger than my colleagues diamond, you don’t love me enough!
Ask any older lady whether anyone expected a diamond ring x times the man’s salary for an engagement 50 years ago. Or diamonds for Valentine’s, dear jesus! Or whether they, in fact, made a big deal of Valentine’s day at all.
I, for one, refuse to be manipulated.
this is one lame event. interesting to consider how/whether this should fit with the whole idea behind funcheap?
johann, thanks for your comment about why this event was posted on funcheap.
i had to think long and hard about whether to include this on the funcheap site – first of all it’s free and it’s right around valentine’s day – also i’ve been to Simayof before (i got my ring sized, but didn’t buy anything) and the two people i dealt with there were not into a big sales pitch and i found to be very laid back and helpful, so i’m inclined to believe them when they say this is an informative workshop for men and not a sales pitch.
so it certainly “could” turn out to be super high sales pressure event rather than a helpful lecture for guys on dating and buying presents, but given my personal experience at the store i thought it was worth the chance to post it with the caveat about them saying it’s not a sales pitch so that men could make their own decision about whether to attend or not.
