Silicon Valley Astronomy Lecture Series | Los Altos

Founded in 1999, the Silicon Valley Astronomy Lecture Series lectures are presented on six Wednesday evenings during each school year at Foothill College. Speakers over the years have included Nobel-prize winners, members of the National Academy of Sciences and many other well-known scientists explaining astronomical developments in everyday language.

The series, moderated by Foothill College Astronomy instructor Andrew Fraknoi, is sponsored by the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, the SETI Institute, NASA’s Ames Research Center and Foothill College. Topics range from the exploration of the planets to the speeding up of the expanding universe; from planets around other stars to black holes at the centers of distant galaxies.

Admission is free and the public is invited. Seating is first come, first served. Arrive early to locate parking.

Join Dr. Chris Impey, university distinguished astronomy professor and associate dean of the University of Arizona College of Science, for Beyond: Our Future in Space on Wednesday, February 15 at 7 pm in the Smithwick Theatre at Foothill College.

Part of the 17th annual Silicon Valley Astronomy Lecture Series, this illustrated, non-technical talk is free and open to the public. Seating is first-come, first-served. Arrive early to locate parking.

The talk will review the history and landmarks of the international space program, give a snapshot of the current situation, and plot the trajectory of the future of space travel. The early successes of the Space Age were driven by a fierce rivalry between the Soviet Union and the United States.

Now, a vibrant private sector led by SpaceX and Virgin Galactic plans to launch supplies cheaply into Earth orbit and give anyone the chance of a sub-orbital joy ride. Permanent bases on the Moon and Mars are now within reach, and a new Space Race is brewing, with Asian countries ascendant.
