Friday Nights at the de Young | Fall 2018

One of San Francisco’s most celebrated after-hours museum events returns for a fall season of 2018.

These nine Friday Nights feature free admission to the main-level galleries highlighted by a reinterpretation of contemporary art in their permanent collection and new acquisitions called Specters of Disruption. In addition, Friday Nights will offer reduced-price tickets of $14 to the exhibition Contemporary Muslim Fashions from 6–8:30 pm.

Through social-media moments and in-person dialogue, visitors can engage and commune with the art and with one another in a warm and welcoming setting. Enjoy specialty drinks and mocktails, coffees, teas, and snacks. Bring your friends. Strike a pose at the selfie wall. Listen to music. Make art. Activities take place from 6–8:30 pm.

The de Young presents fresh music sounds of the Broken Shadows Family Band, led by Darren Johnston.

6:00 pm | Closing Reception: “Traced Memories” by Artist-in-Residence Adela Akers | Kimball Education Gallery
Celebrate the residency of August Artist-in-Residence Adela Akers and her installment Traced Memories. Light refreshments served.

6:00 pm | Mixed-Media Art-Making Stations | Buchanan Court
Every week, Friday Night at the de Young offers art making to encourage everyone, of all ages, to tap into their creativity.

6:30 pm | Live Music by the Broken Shadows Family Band | Wilsey Court
The Oakland-based Broken Shadows Family Band is an all-star cast of musicians from divergent backgrounds. Musical ingredients in their family recipe include Western European, classical Arabic, Slavic choral, and Americana music as well as sounds from Macedonia, Ethiopia, classic jazz, and R&B. They’ve created a truly unique sound, balancing the old with the new, telling human stories over grooves that beg to be danced to.
