Friday Nights at the de Young | Fall 2018

One of San Francisco’s most celebrated after-hours museum events returns for a fall season of 2018.

These nine Friday Nights feature free admission to the main-level galleries highlighted by a reinterpretation of contemporary art in their permanent collection and new acquisitions called Specters of Disruption. In addition, Friday Nights will offer reduced-price tickets of $14 to the exhibition Contemporary Muslim Fashions from 6–8:30 pm.

Through social-media moments and in-person dialogue, visitors can engage and commune with the art and with one another in a warm and welcoming setting. Enjoy specialty drinks and mocktails, coffees, teas, and snacks. Bring your friends. Strike a pose at the selfie wall. Listen to music. Make art. Activities take place from 6–8:30 pm.

Soundwave creates a modernist event with works that explore water, our most important natural resource.

6:30–7 pm & 8–8:30 pm – Live Music by Conspiracy of Beards – Wilsey Court
The unique 30-member all-male choir Conspiracy of Beards performs water-inspired songs of legendary poet and songwriter Leonard Cohen (b. 1934).

6 pm – Performance Installation by Jay Kremier – Garden of Enchantment
Sound artist and instrument builder Jay Kremier creates When It’s Gone, a performance installation that explores human use of water and waste, using an invented instrument made of laboratory glass, which makes sounds of different tones and pitches as it fills and empties, evoking repetition and emptiness.

6 pm – Aural installation by Luciano Chessa – Hamon Education Tower—9th Floor
Composer Luciano Chessa performs the world premiere of a site-specific work, which he calls “a sky-view aural experience into our changing landscapes that summons back our vanishing seas.” Performances are 30 minutes long and take place from 6–6:30 pm and 7:30–8 pm.

6 pm – “Following the Thread,” by Artist-in-Residence Adele Crawford – Kimball Education Gallery
Adele Crawford’s work investigates transience and impermanence. Drawing from an ever-expanding collection of commonplace materials, she explores elements of past and present. Selecting obsolete things, such as photographs from the 1800s, vintage books, or personal papers, she alters their appearance and creates for them a new intention. Process drives her work, which is slow, reflective, and repetitive as she dissects, alters, and reconfigures.

6 pm Art Installation by Moses Hacmon – Wilsey Court
Artist Moses Hacmon presents his breathtaking large-scale photographic art installation Faces of Water, which captures the movement and energy of water.

6 pm – Mixed-Media Art-Making Stations – Buchanan Court
Create a Modernist mixed-media art project inspired by Modernism from the National Gallery of Art: The Robert & Jane Meyerhoff Collection.
