Event Details

Friday Nights at the de Young | Fall 2018

One of San Francisco’s most celebrated after-hours museum events returns for a fall season of 2018.

These nine Friday Nights feature free admission to the main-level galleries highlighted by a reinterpretation of contemporary art in their permanent collection and new acquisitions called Specters of Disruption. In addition, Friday Nights will offer reduced-price tickets of $14 to the exhibition Contemporary Muslim Fashions from 6–8:30 pm.

Through social-media moments and in-person dialogue, visitors can engage and commune with the art and with one another in a warm and welcoming setting. Enjoy specialty drinks and mocktails, coffees, teas, and snacks. Bring your friends. Strike a pose at the selfie wall. Listen to music. Make art. Activities take place from 6–8:30 pm.

Friday Nights at the de Young | September 12, 2014

6:30 pm | Live Music by Daniel Popsicle | Wilsey Court
Daniel Popsicle was founded in 1999 by Dan Plonsey to play the music of El Cerrito. Most of the music that Plonsey has written for Popsicle is in one of three series: Music for Occasions of State, Color Music (intended for people to create art with), and the New Monsters, of which there are 165. Plonsey, born in Cleveland, Ohio, has lived in the Bay Area since 1984. In addition to writing music for his own groups, he is known for composing an opera with Harvey Pekar called Leave Me Alone.

7:45 pm | Live Music by Kneel | Wilsey Court
Kneel is a Neil Young tribute band formed by John Shiurba (Eskimo, Ebola Soup, Spezza Rotto, dotdotdot), Angela Coon (Ninewood, Toychestra, dotdotdot), Tom Scandura (Molecules, Surplus 1980), and Chris Daniels, who were thrown together 15+ years ago for a Vaccination Records Rock Lotto Night and never stopped loving Neil Young. Joined by guests Lexa Walsh and Berge Thomasian.

7:15 pm | Film Screening: “First Friday” (2014) | Koret Auditorium
See an excerpt from the soon-to-be-released film First Friday, a documentary film about Oakland’s monthly street party by N’Jeri Eaton & Mario Furloni.

6 pm | “Following the Thread,” by Artist-in-Residence Adele Crawford | Kimball Education Gallery
Adele Crawford’s work investigates transience and impermanence. Drawing from an ever-expanding collection of commonplace materials, she explores elements of past and present. Selecting obsolete things, such as photographs from the 1800s, vintage books, or personal papers, she alters their appearance and creates for them a new intention. Process drives her work, which is slow, reflective, and repetitive as she dissects, alters, and reconfigures.
