Friday Nights at the de Young | Fall 2018

One of San Francisco’s most celebrated after-hours museum events returns for a fall season of 2018.

These nine Friday Nights feature free admission to the main-level galleries highlighted by a reinterpretation of contemporary art in their permanent collection and new acquisitions called Specters of Disruption. In addition, Friday Nights will offer reduced-price tickets of $14 to the exhibition Contemporary Muslim Fashions from 6–8:30 pm.

Through social-media moments and in-person dialogue, visitors can engage and commune with the art and with one another in a warm and welcoming setting. Enjoy specialty drinks and mocktails, coffees, teas, and snacks. Bring your friends. Strike a pose at the selfie wall. Listen to music. Make art. Activities take place from 6–8:30 pm.

Film Screening: “Eco de la montaña” from Cine+Mas San Francisco’s Latino Film Festival

Eco de la montaña (Echo of the Mountain) (2014, 92 min.) documents the life, work, and struggle for survival of Santos de la Torre, a great Huichol artist. While one of his chaquira (a kind of diminutive, coloured bead) mural enjoys a privileged position at the threshold of the Louvre Museum in Paris, he lives in anonymity at the heart of the Sierra Madre Occidental, in Jalisco.

Visible Music Inspired by Turner: by Artist Peggy Gyulai and the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra All-Star Quintet

Inspired by the power and atmosphere of J.M.W. Turner’s paintings, painter Peggy Gyulai joins five musical virtuosos from the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra to present a unique evening of live musical performance and painting.

Herbst Exhibition Galleries

Find docents in the galleries on Friday nights between 6:30 and 7:30 pm. Docents will answer questions, explain the paintings, and share information about Mr. Turner and his remarkable painting techniques. Unlike a formal tour, docents will be strolling the galleries and ready to help you enjoy this marvelous exhibit.
