“Golden Thread” Middle Eastern Staged Reading Series | SF
Golden Thread’s popular staged reading series returns, introducing five singular voices to the Bay Area. They invite you to laugh, cry, and think alongside these beautiful stories from and about the Middle East. Each play is teeming with unexpected humor, surprising characters, and important questions about the world we live in today.
You will have an opportunity to ask questions and engage the director and the cast in conversation after each reading. Join the creative process of a new play and discover brilliant gems never before seen in the Bay Area.

Harun al-Rashid’s attempt to amuse himself by having the impoverished and disgruntled merchant Abu ‘Izza drugged and placed on the throne for a day backfires when the merchant refuses to step down. In this influential, multilayered, and humorous play, master Syrian playwright and famed agitator Wannous employs a variety of traditional and modern theatrical techniques to question blind deference to power.
