Event Details

Congresswoman Anna Eshoo will share the history of the Suffrage Movement when most women were prohibited from voting or exercising the same civil rights as men based on the idea that “a married woman’s legal existence was incorporated into that of her husband.” With so few rights, many women drew parallels between their social and political state and that of slaves.

The seventy-two-year-long battle for woman’s right to vote in the United States promoted civic action among newly enfranchised women through organizations like the League of Women Voters and the now defunct National American Woman Suffrage Association. This long fought battle with supporters being ridiculed, beaten and imprisoned culminated in the ratification of the 19th Amendment.
