Free Kabuki Film Screenings | Japantown
Kabuki is a classical Japanese dance-drama. Kabuki theatre is known for the stylization of its drama and for the elaborate make-up worn by some of its performers.
The Japanese Cultural and Community Center present free screenings of Kabuki theater on film with English subtitles and explanation for those who are lost. All ages welcome.
If you are curious about why Kabuki’s unique combination of drama, music, dance, and spectacle continues to entertain millions every year, “here’s your chance to see one of the finest Kabuki films ever made, free, amongst fans and experts who will gladly fill you in on all the social and historical aspects of the performance” (Flavorpill “Editor’s Pick”).
Join Kabuki on Film as they explore the dramatic concluding acts of “The 47 Ronin,” one of the most popular samurai revenge tales of all time. The Bunraku drama, “The Loyalty of Gihei,” and the Kabuki drama, “The Attack on Morono’s Mansion,” will be shown.
Is the merchant Gihei willing to make the ultimate sacrifice to support the 47 Ronin in their mission? Can the 47 themselves see the mission through to the bitter end?
There’s no need to have seen prior acts as these dramas are self-contained stories. The films are in Japanese with English subtitles.
