Event Details

A lecture and reading from Mark Twain’s writings featuring North California and Nevada including some unpublished material on race relations and police brutality in San Francisco in the 1860s.

Hosted at the gorgeously renovated Bernal Heights Library, this includes an open mike opportunities for any Twain fan.

You may not realize the extent to which Mark Twain’s life and works is important to the Bay Area. His contributions to local journalism in San Francisco (and satires of the early life of the city) are as essential to local culture as the Beat Poets were.

At UC Berkeley, the Mark Twain Project houses 100s of manuscripts and 5,000 letters he wrote and literary scholars are still sorting through it all. This year, the first volume of his autobiography (at a lofty 700+ pages) was published, after a 100-year posthumous wait per the author’s wishes, giving us new insight into his life.
