Event Details

The San Francisco Art Institute presents an evening of collective listening as they bring to life the recordings of Radio Free Pocha. Rather than listen independently to the recordings, a common troupe of audio exhibitions, the space of the Mexican bus becomes a mobile listening station.

Free, but an RSVP is required.

The aim of this project is not an attempt to recreate the original Mexican bus tour, but rather to curate a podcast, relaying on the audio-archive of performance artist Guillermo Gómez-Peña’s radio work in the spirit of the original Mexican Bus Tour, El Corazon de la Mission.

After language and live performance, Gómez-Peña cites the radio as a one of the most important weapons of socio-artistic intervention at his disposal. The name of his online experimental radio archive, Radio Free Pocha, is itself a reference to the complexities and contradictions of language and words. “Pocha,” a Spanish slang word for a Mexican-American woman with poor Spanish speaking skills, is itself a reference to the complicated identities of place and culture that he provokes within the radio format.

All tours will begin and end at The Lab, located at 16th and Capp Street in the Redbrick Building.

First Tour: 7-8 pm
Second Tour: 8:30-9:30 pm
