Mission District “Calle 24” Latino Art Stroll & Mural Tour | SF

Calle 24 hosts an all-day Paseo Artistico / Art Stroll, a joint effort between several noted Calle 24 arts organizations, Paseo Artistico will bring music, poetry, book readings film and cultural tours to the 24th Street corridor every second Saturday.

“Calle 24” spans 14 city blocks, the section of 24th Street bounded by Valencia Street to the west and Potrero Avenue to the east and has served as the center of Latino activism, arts, commerce, and culture in San Francisco since the 1940s.

– Award-winning poet Jorge Tetl Argueta will be reading selections for children from his bi-lingual books published by Luna’s Press. Jorge is a native Salvadoran and Pipil Nahua Indian who spent much of his childhood in rural El Salvador. A celebrated poet and writer, he feels everybody is capable of writing, especially young children who are natural poets.

BOMBA CLASSES: A Folkloric Tradition of Puerto Rico
– Taught by Melissa Reyes. Puerto Rican Bomba, as we know it today, was born on the sugar cane plantations of the Island. It’s the popular response formed in music and dance to the aristocracy. Through the rhythms, happiness, faith, suffering, and daily events were communicated through the Tradition. The Tradition was born on the coasts of Puerto Rico and, on the coasts, is where it’s said to sound best. The barriles (Bomba drums) or las Bombas is where the name for Bomba came from. “In Bomba, there are three or more buleadores (rhythm drums/drummers) and only one primo or subidor (lead drummer),” as told by Rafael Cepeda Atiles, El Patriarca de la Bomba (known as the Patriarch of Bomba).
