Event Details

Join Nature in the City in the heart of downtown San Francisco to learn how the Western Tiger Swallowtail butterfly (Papilio rutulus) has found a home on San Francisco’s Market Street. The butterfly lives a complete life cycle in the London Plane trees that line the busy thoroughfare, and the canyon of tall buildings lined with trees resembles the butterfly’s natural habitat – a river canyon. Nature in the City is working to create habitat islands on Market Street that provide nectar sources and larval food trees for the butterflies.

  • This walk is timed to coincide with the peak fall flight of the butterflies, so hopefully, you will see them in multiple locations.
  • The walk will commence at the E-Trade Plaza steps (enter off Market between Sansome and Battery). The group will gather for a lunchtime talk for 15 minutes.
  • At 12:15 Amber and Kirstin will lead the group on a 45 minute walk along Market Street to Embarcadero, then around to Sue Bierman Park where Western Tiger Swallowtails mate, also called a lek.

Preparation: Bring a lunch if this walk overlaps with your lunch break. Layers are always important downtown. Free but an RSVP is required.
