Sandbox is a monthly open mic, held every second Thursday, for playtesting live games and participatory experiences. Work presented is generally embodied play–unlike video games or board games, the experiences at Sandbox generally involve players moving around and exploring space and interacting with other players.

Each month, seasoned and amateur designers alike are welcome to share games with a playful audience; players of all sorts are invited to play, learn, critique, and get acquainted with the art of experience design.

Bring a game to share or enjoy playing others’ experiences.

The night starts with one or two quick warm-up games played together as a group. Afterward, the games for the night are introduced and you’ll break into groups to play your choice of games.

If you have a work-in-progress and want to try it out, even if it has nothing to do with the theme, you’re welcome to run it at Sandbox and gather feedback.

Join in on a special East Bay edition of Sandbox. Meet at Lake Merritt, outside Fairyland, near Grand Ave and Park View Terrace in Oakland.

Invent a game/experience and try it out,  or come try someone else’s game. Themes are a suggestion; experiences that are entirely independent of the month’s theme are very welcome; they are happy to make time for you.

This month’s theme is “New Sports.”

They’ll start with a few minutes to socialize and then break into groups to play and give feedback on the games people bring.
