Presidio Free Programs: Talks, Music & Performances | SF

San Francisco’s tradition of diverse cultural expression started at the Presidio, and continues today with events that enlighten, engage, and entertain, taking place at the Presidio Officers’ Club.

Enjoy topical discussions, live music, dance, and interactive family activities, all free to the public and sponsored by the Presidio Trust, in partnership with cultural institutions from across the Bay Area.

The traditional book club revamped as an inclusive, public program that anyone can take part in, whether or not they’ve read the book. Part book club, part graduate seminar, and part Parisian salon — everyone is welcome to attend the contextualizing remarks by the club facilitator and participate in or listen to the discussion of both the book and the general topic that follows.

Featured book: Empires, Nations, and Families: A History of the North American West, 1800-1860
by Anne Hyde
Saturday, March 28, 1 to 3 pm

Free, but an RSVP is required

Tracing family stories from the Canadian North to the Mexican borderlands and from the Pacific Coast to the Mississippi river, this book documents the broad family associations that crossed national and ethnic lines forming the basis for a global trade in furs that had operated for hundreds of years before the land became part of the United States. Hyde’s work reveals how, in the 1850s, immigrants to these newest regions of the United States violently wrested control from Native and other powers, and how conquest and competing demands for land and resources brought about a volatile frontier culture—not at all the peace and prosperity that the new power had promised. A Pulitzer Prize finalist and winner of the 2012 Bancroft Prize for the best book in North American history.
