Event Details

For nearly 140 years, the Presidio’s multiple Army bands played an essential role not just at the military post but in the cultural life of the Bay Area. This multimedia presentation will be a lively march through some highlights of the bands’ rich history, related through anecdotes, images, audio and video clips, personal reminiscences, and live band music.

The story begins before the Civil War, encompasses the crucial years when the bands kept San Francisco dancing through the grim aftermath of the 1906 earthquake to the city’s subsequent resurgence, the Beat years when the bands produced such jazz luminaries as Chet Baker and Herb Alpert, all the way to the Army’s departure from the Presidio in 1994.
