“Show Us Your Spines” Indie Writers Reading | SF Main Library

The Radar Reading Series has been going on for over 14 years now and starting 2018 they will be changing the format from a one-time reading 12 times a year to six month-long residencies that result in a bi-monthly presentation of work.

Show Us Your Spines is a month-long writer residency + reading in collaboration with the SF Public Library’s Hormel Center. For a month QTPOC writers will work with Hormel Center LGBT archives around a specific queer theme, writing/producing a piece that will then be read/presented the following month at the Hormel Center.

Each residency cohort will be comprised of four writers/artists, who will spend one month with a section/theme of the archives chosen by both RADAR and the library. During that month they will write/create a piece inspired by the chosen ephemera.

Presenting:

• Helen Klonaris is a Bahamian writer, educator, and energy medicine practitioner living in the Bay Area. Her short stories and essays have been published in numerous anthologies and journal. She was shortlisted for the 2014 Commonwealth Short Story Prize, and was a finalist in the 2015 Machigonne Fiction Contest. She is co-editor of the anthology Writing the Walls Down: A Convergence of LGBTQ Voices, published by Trans-Genre Press, and her debut collection of short stories If I Had the Wings is due out June, 2017 with Peepal Tree Press. Helen teaches comparative mythology and religion at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco.
• Melissa Sipin – Nicknamed “small but terrible” by her lola, Melissa R. Sipin was born and raised in Carson, CA. She co-edited Kuwento: Lost Things (Carayan Press 2014) and is Editor-in-Chief of TAYO Literary Magazine.
• Beatrice Thomas – Beatrice Thomas a.k.a Black Benatar is a multidisciplinary artist, writer, performer, and thinker. Thomas received her M.F.A in Design from the University of Texas, and her B.A. in Film/Video/Theater from Hampshire College where she honed her non-traditional storytelling skills. Themes of duality, alternate futures and re-visioning reality characterize her work. Thomas attributes John Waters, Octavia Butler, Marlon Riggs, and science fiction and fantasy genres as key influencers.
• Maw Shein Win – Maw Shein Win is a poet and educator who lives and works in the Bay Area. Her writing has appeared in various journals, including Cimarron Review, Fanzine, Eleven Eleven, the Fabulist, and the anthology Cross-Strokes: Poetry Between Los Angeles and San Francisco (Otis Books/Seismicity Editions). Her most recent poetry chapbook is Score and Bone on Nomadic Press, and she has a full-length poetry collection coming out in spring 2018 on Manic D Press. Win is the first poet laureate of El Cerrito, California.
