San Francisco Bike Party (First Fridays)

San Francisco Bike Party  (not to be confused with Critical Mass) is a monthly celebration of biking for riders of different ages, types, and skill levels to enjoy. Every month is a different theme and you’re encouraged to dress up.

San Francisco Bike Party is held on the first Friday at 8:00 pm every month (meet at 7:30p, roll at 8p). The starting location and route also changes every month. Check SF Bike Party’s Facebook page for updates.

The rides are fun and safe with stops to dance and socialize along the way. You’ll follow planned routes exploring all different parts of the city each month. They encourage people to bring positivity and contribute to good times while being respectful to others.

Who runs it? Created by a co-op, by and for bike enthusiasts, run by volunteers who plan the routes, test ride them, help participants ride in control, avoid traffic disruption, and not get lost. How SFBP rides: – Stay in the right lane – Stop at red lights – Leave no trace – Ride predictably and in control – Roll past conflict – Ride prepared – When in doubt, “bike party!!”

Celebrate women this Bike Month by dressing as your favorite female icon! There are lots to choose from: Las Ovas, Rosie the Riveter, She-Ra, Wonder Woman, The Suffragettes, The Notorious RBG, Riot Grrrls, and the list goes on and on and on….and on.

—- A special note providing more context on this month’s theme —-
Hi Bike Partiers, it’s been brought to our attention some folks are not happy about this month’s She-roes theme. This theme was chosen by our organizing group (majority of which is made up of women of varying racial and socioeconomic backgrounds) to celebrate the women heroes in our life—be they doctors, couriers, community organizers, bike racers, bell hooks, Wonder Woman or Beyonce. We originally chose the theme for Women’s History Month, but needed to reschedule due to rain.

This not just a theme for one ride, but one our female organizers live every day. We are leaders, riders and community members who want to make space in the overwhelmingly male geared community. This theme was developed, designed and lead by women for women.

While all of our themes are given thought to ensure they don’t encourage further objectification or romanticization of women, we feel this ride is paramount. Representation and being present are equally important. This is an opportunity for all our women, womyn and female identified riders, organizers and attendees to take the lead. While costumes are encouraged (bc who doesn’t want to honor your favorite feminist leader by cosplaying them?!), the mere fact that we are women, womyn and female identified humans riding our bikes is a radical move. We hope that all folks can join us as we lead by example for a future filled with women on bikes.
