The San Francisco Chamber Orchestra celebrates its 57th season of performing classical music with a series of free concerts to ring in 2010. three duets and a full-length symphony:

Upcoming Performances:
8pm Thursday, Dec 31, 2009 First Congregational Church, 2345 Channing Way, Berkeley
3pm Friday, Jan 1, 2010 St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 600 Colorado Avenue, Palo Alto
8pm Saturday, Jan 2, 2010 Empress Theatre, 330 Virginia Street, Vallejo
3pm Sunday, Jan 3, 2010 Herbst Theatre, 401 Van Ness Avenue, San Francisco

This concert features four pairs of soloists and a great, double-digit Haydn symphony, No. 77 in B-flat Major from his prolific period at the Esterhazy court. Double concertos by Antonio Vivaldi, Arthur Honegger, and a world premiere by local violinist and composer Gloria Justen will be presented, plus an evocative duo for two violins by SFCO’s Grammy award-winning Composer in Residence, Gabriela Lena Frank, from her string quartet Quijotadas. The SFCO continues its Debut Artists tradition, featuring rising young classical stars from the Bay Area, with young cellists Isabel Lau and Benjamin Luo performing Vivaldi’s dramatic Concerto for Two Cellos in G minor.

Gloria Justen’s evocative music springs from her explorations in improvisation and desire to create soundscapes that reflect the natural world back to us. Her Double Concerto for Violin and Cello, commissioned by the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra, will receive its world premiere performance, featuring Ms. Justen herself on violin and SFCO principal cellist Eric Gaenslen on cello.
