Event Details

McKinley Art Solutions and UCSF National Center of Excellence in Women’s Health present “Serenity: Elevated Joy”, featuring artists Salma Arastu, Leslie Morgan, Mari Marks and Sean Vallely.

“Through my art I have been able to transcend my physical limitation to create images of transformation,” explains Salma Arastu, exhibiting on Floor 3. The paintings on display are from her series Turning Rumi: Singing Verses of Love, Unity and Freedom, a selection chosen from the larger body of 52 mixed media paintings inspired by Rumi’s poems.

A former competitive swimmer and Psychologist prior to pursuing art full time, Floor 4 artist Leslie Morgan integrates water and her positive association with this element into her mixed media works, always conscious of and wishing to impart the freedom of both body and mind she associates with the feeling of buoyancy in this life-giving element.

A student of both Richard Diebenkorn and Elizabeth Murray, Mari Marks, showing on Floor 5, is celebrated for her unique encaustic works rooted in rhythm, repetition and nature. Noted art critic Peter Selz describes her work as “… luminous encaustic paintings. They may suggest clouds, sand, rippling water, ploughed earth, heavy fog-everything from mountain ranges and deep canyons to beehives and fingerprints. They can also evoke a sense of turmoil as well as a feeling of peace. A special luminosity seems to emerge from the material and the process employed by the artist.”

Sean Vallely is a self-described “patient sunset stalker who aims his camera not at the sun on the horizon but on the terrain being painted by that special quality of light and being played to its best advantage.” His panoramic photographs of manmade and natural monuments, showing on Floor 6, are testament to his desire to constantly explore and travel.

Reception: Wednesday, Apr 29, 5:30-7:30pm at Floors 3-6, Exhibition Apr 16 – July 14, 2015
