The San Francisco History Association hosts monthly talks which explore our city’s enchanting history in depth.
Each month, a local history expert hosts a themed talk usually accompanied by a slide show with light refreshments.
Learn all about Dolly Fine, a notorious and successful madam in 1930s San Francisco, who was a reluctant witness before the 1937 Grand Jury investigating police corruption. The presenter, Hank Chapot, is a San Francisco native, Mission High and San Francisco State graduate, and an amateur historian.
The mayor and board of supervisors, responding to public indignation over ill-gotten police fortunes, hired private investigators to investigate police riches acquired from horse-race bookie joints, after-hours saloons, hundreds of long established bordellos, pinball parlors, underground abortionists and even legitimate enterprises. Dozens of cops lost their jobs. Dolly, the city’s first profit-sharing madam, was the first woman ever prosecuted for contributing to the delinquency of minors.
