Event Details

On Thursday nights, SF IndieFest presents a double feature movie night at Konservatory, a groovy underground-ish SoMa loft space with a comfy speakeasy vibe. This week’s feature is a straight-up rip off – a turkish film that apes Star Wars.

Cinema Zone Double Feature Night
Thursday, November 20, 2014 | 7:30 pm doors
Konservatory, 43 Dore at Howard, SF
FREE with mention of FUNCHEAP at door (otherwise, it’s $10)

If imitation is the most sincere form of flattery, George Lucas and Steven Speilberg must be straight-up two-dimensional at this point.

The Man Who Saved the World (aka the Turkish “Star Wars”)
A crash landing on a desert planet, an old wizard bent on ruling the Galaxy…Nope, different movie. Take an awkward, no-budget Eastern European space fantasy, add a healthy dose of Turkey’s more-than-liberal international copyright law enforcement and bake on ‘high’ with scenes from Star Wars, and you have a movie that is technically called The Man Who Saved the World, but is more well-known by the colloquial Turkish Star Wars. Dir: Cetin Inac. 1982. 91 mins. 8 pm

Mac and Me 3
A “Mysterious Alien Creature” (Mac) and a boy in a wheelchair (ME?!) escape nefarious NASA agents and try to get back to their respective families. That’s a “mysterious alien creature,” not an “extra-terrestrial.” Did someone say Mac? I guess I’m hungry for a Big Mac now – if only there was a seven minute musical sequence set at a McDonald’s featuring Ronald McDonald in this movie! Oh, there is? Now that’s extra value cinema! Starring Jade Calegory, Christine Ebersole and Ronald McDonald. Dir: Stewart Raffill. 1988. 99 mins. 10 pm.
